4 Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Display Plants

Few things are as festive as display plants that are healthy and well-maintained. In a time when most of us live indoors, fresh, colorful greenery can remind us of the wonders of nature by bringing it right into our homes. However, to maximize your display, a little planning can go a long way.

What should you consider before making a big plant purchase?

  • Appearance

This may seem obvious until you get home and realize all of your plants are about the same height, shape, and color. If you want a dynamic display, plants should be of varied heights, degrees of fullness, and color. Think about how the plants will look and interact next to each other. Consider taking pictures of plants to give you a better idea of how they’ll look in your home.
  • Light and Temperature

Flowering plants generally need full sunlight every day to produce big, colorful blooms. In addition, some plants will wither and die if they get too hot or too cold. To make maintenance easy, display plants should work with the existing light and temperature of your display area.
  • Moisture

This can get tricky and will involve a little research into the specific display plants you choose. Moisture levels involve the humidity in the air, the amount and type of water you use on your plants and how often you use it, and the dampness or dryness of the soil between watering. No time for regular plant maintenance? Ask your vendor which greenery works best with minimal attention.
  • Planters

This may seem purely aesthetic, but it isn’t. The size, shape, and material of your planters will greatly impact the health of your plant. Wood and terra cotta can help regulate moisture, glazed ceramics can be beautiful but fragile, and metal containers can be incredibly durable but may get very hot or cold and may be too heavy for one person to move.
