Fixer upper plants – Joanna Gaines favorite finishing touch

Maybe we love it because it takes place in Texas… or because the designs are homey and beautiful… or because the lead roles are family-friendly, faithful, fun folks… or maybe because Joanna Gaines always uses plants in her chic designs! That’s right—it’s Fixer Upper, y’all.

What is my absolute favorite part of finishing up a Fixer Upper project? That’s easy—adding plants.

Fixer Upper (1) is one of the most popular shows on television (2) for good reason—including those listed above, but we must admit we are partial to her frequent use of lovely plants to liven up her clients’ spaces.

To me, plants bring a space to life, and that is one of the best parts of personalizing a home for my clients. —Joanna Gaines

So what are Joanna’s favorite plants to incorporate into her design spaces?

You can view Joanna’s list of favorite houseplants here (5) and how best to utilize them to liven up your living and working spaces.

Putting Joanna’s design elements aside,
did you know that plants also help to detoxify your air?

Benefits of Plants for HumansAccording to a ‘Clean Air Study’ by NASA (3), there are dozens of time-tested plants that are excellent at filtering out the worst chemical offenders.

For example, ammonia, usually found in window cleaners, floor waxes and many household cleaning solvents can be filtered out most effectively by Anthuriums, Rhapis excelsa (Lady Palm) or Chrysanthemums to name a few.

Formaldehyde can be found hiding in your children’s paper lunch sacks, those always convenient paper towels & napkins. And if you think your tissue paper is toxic only after use…think again!

So whether you interact with some of these chemicals at home or at work, we’d encourage you to check out the infographic on the left (4) for a common list of chemical offenders, the effects on humans and their counteractive air-cleaning plants.

Throw in some beautiful (and very functional!) plants into your home or office as soon as possible. They’ll start working for you, in many valuable ways, before you can say Season Finale! (6)
