Northwest Center: Transforming Offices with Biophilic Design

When we think of office buildings, we often think of grey, monotonous cubicles and rows of fluorescent lights that seem to go on forever. However, office environments don’t always look dreary. Some offices have become bright, warm oases that create relaxing environments for tenants and their employees.

So, how are they doing this?

Both elements are scientifically proven to have a major impact on the physical and mental health of employees, ultimately improving productivity. In the long run, the health benefits created by biophilic office design can not only improve the overall wellbeing of occupants, but also generate a significant return on investment for business owners.

One office that has fully embraced biophilic design in its space is Westdale’s Northwest Center in San Antonio, Texas. With a stunning multi-story atrium and plants throughout its common areas, Northwest Center is a perfect example of just how much indoor plants, and biophilic design as a whole, can transform a space, making it a more enjoyable working environment for employees and business owners alike.

Why Biophilic Design?

Incorporating plants and other natural elements into office spaces, like Northwest Center, enhances more than just the visual appeal of a space. Numerous studies have shown that biophilic design elements; such as plants, natural light, and natural textures; can reduce stress, improve air quality, and boost employee productivity. These studies prove that interior landscaping can create more than an aesthetic lift, adding plants to your office space can also help create a welcoming, energizing environment for tenants, their employees, and their visitors.

Thats where our team comes in. At Natura, we specialize in bringing nature indoors, just like our team did here at Northwest Center. With the help of our horticultural technicians, our design team brought Northwest Center's atrium to life with a variety of tropical and seasonal plants. Some of these plants are permanent elements of the design, while others are rotated to keep the space fresh and lively for the Northwest Center's tenants. Currently, the atrium is home to several Aechmea Serratas that add a touch of color to the plant beds.

Featuring 87 unique plants, the atrium at Northwest Center is a true biophilic paradise that provides tenants and their employees with a space to stay connected with nature while they work. In Northwest Center’s Atrium you’ll find…

  • 15 Dracaena Dragons
  • 5 White Birds of Paradise
  • 12 Aechmea Massimas
  • And a variety of other indoor plants

This brand-new atrium design was installed earlier this year by San Antonio account executive, Courtney Fisher, and our team of trained horticultural technicians. See more of the Northwest Center’s atrium in the image gallery below:

The lobby atrium isn’t the only place Northwest Center has indoor plants. Biophilic design has been embraced in all of the building's common spaces. You’ll find plants in the elevator bays, on balconies, and throughout each hallway in the building. Even their management office is filled to the brim with plants. Stay tuned to see the biophilic transformation of more businesses as employers continue to embrace biophilic design.
